ALGEMEEN ENGELS - BEGINNER
(van A1 naar A2)
Voor beginners en valse beginners die eenvoudig, praktisch toepasbaar Engels nodig hebben voor school, reizen en het dagelijks leven.
Spreek- en luistervaardigheden richten zich op praktische taken zoals inchecken, koffie kopen, kleding kopen, de weg vragen, een maaltijd bestellen en naar de luchthaven gaan.
De woordenschat omvat getallen, landen, taal voor in de klas, beroepen, familie, dagelijkse routine, het weer, eten en drinken, plaatsen, vakanties, boeken en films.
De grammatica bouwt op van be, voornaamwoorden, bezittelijke vormen, gebiedende wijs, present simple en present continuous, can/can't, past simple, there is/there are, telbare en ontelbare zelfstandige naamwoorden, vergelijkingen, be going to, bijwoorden en present perfect.
Deze cursussen richten zich op praktisch Engels dat je kunt gebruiken op school, in sociale situaties, op het werk, en tijdens het reizen.
De lessen zijn praktisch en gericht op het opbouwen van spreekvaardigheid, zelfvertrouwen en vloeiendheid. Er wordt gewerkt met moderne communicatieve methoden, geïnspireerd door de evidence-based natural approach.
De lessen vinden face-to-face plaats in kleine groepen van 6 tot 8 cursisten, voor €375 per persoon.
Voor cursisten die de stap zetten van basisengels naar zelfverzekerdere dagelijkse communicatie. Ook wel bekend als het 'pre-intermedaire' niveau.
Spreek- en luistervaardigheden blijven praktisch door taken zoals de receptie bellen, uit eten gaan, iet terugbrengen naar een winkel, naar de apotheek gaan, de weg vragen en telefoneren
De woordenschat omvat relaties, kleding, vakanties, luchthavens, restaurants, huishoudelijke taken, winkelen, gezondheid, werk, school, sport, biografieën, dieren, routebeschrijvingen en ongebruikelijke beroepen.
De grammatica ontwikkelt zich via vraagvormen, vertellen in de tegenwoordige en verleden tijd, toekomstplannen, present perfect, something/anything/nothing, vergrotende en overtreffende trappen, kwantoren, infinitieven en gerunds, have to/must/should, de eerste en tweede voorwaardelijke wijs, passieve vormen, used to, might, past perfect en indirecte rede.
ALGEMEEN ENGELS - HALFGEVORDERD
(van B1 naar B2)
Voor zelfstandige cursisten die natuurlijker en vloeiender willen spreken in sociale, werk-, reis- en studiecontexten. Ook wel bekend als het 'intermediaire' niveau.
Spreek- en luistervaardigheden richten zich op praktische interactie, zoals reageren op wat mensen zeggen, meningen geven, suggesties doen, toestemming vragen en indirecte vragen gebruiken.
De woordenschat omvat eten, geld, vervoer, familie, telefoontaal, sport, relaties, film, onderwijs, huisvesting, werk, winkelen, technologie en criminaliteit.
De grammatica behandelt tegenwoordige en toekomstige tijdsvormen, present perfect simple en present perfect continuous, lidwoorden, modale werkwoorden voor verplichting en vermogen, verleden tijden, passieve vormen, modale werkwoorden voor afleiding, de eerste, tweede en derde voorwaardelijke wijs, gerunds en infinitieven, indirecte rede, kwantoren, betrekkelijke bijzinnen en vraagstaartjes.
ALGEMEEN ENGELS - GEVORDERD
(van B2 naar C1)
Voor cursisten op een hoger niveau die zelfverzekerder en flexibeler Engels nodig hebben voor discussies, het delen van meningen en communicatie in de echte wereld.
Spreek- en luistervaardigheden blijven sterk praktisch gericht door middel van Colloquial English-lessen en luisteractiviteiten over onderwerpen zoals medische noodgevallen, spannende reizen, bungeejumpen, zpijt, ruzies, criminaliteit, steden en wetenschap.
De woordenschat breidt zich uit naar sollicitatiegesprekken, persoonlijkheid, gezondheid, mode, vliegreizen, het milieu, gevoelen, slaap, muziek, criminaliteit, media, bedrijfsleven, steden en wetenschap.
De grammatica omvat vraagvorming, present perfect simple en present perfect continuous, volgorde van bijvoeglijke naamwoorden, verhalende tijden, future perfect en future continuous, voorwaardelijke zinnen, wish, used to / be used to / get used to, gerunds en infiitieven, modale werkwoorden in de verleden tijd, passieve vormen, werkwoorden voor indirecte rede, bijzinnen van tegenstelling en doel, kwantoren en lidwoorden.
ALGEMEEN ENGELS - VERGEVORDERD
(van C1 naar C2)
Voor zeer gevorderde cursisten die nauwkeurig en genuanceerd Engels willen gebruiken voor professionele, academische en sociale communicatie op hoog niveau.
Spreek- en luistervaardigheden gebruiken verfijnde maar praktische thema's via Colloquial English en luisteractiviteiten over onderwerpen zoals vroegste herinneringen, gedenkwaardige data, stress, verslaving, installatiekunst, moeilijke reizen en vegetarisme.
De woordenschat omvat persoonlijkheid, werk, geheugen, conflict, boeken en films, geluid, tijd, geld, technologie, kunst, gezondheid, reizen, dieren, eten en woorden die vaak met elkaar worden verward.
De grammatica omvat lexicaal versus grammaticaal have, discourse markers, gewoonten in het verleden versus specifieke gebeurtenissen, inversie, speculatie en afleiding, gebruik van de onwerkelijke verleden tijd, verb + object + infinitive/gerund, voorwaardelijke zinnen, toestemming / verplichting / noodzaak, gevorderde gerunds en infinitieven, ellips, betrekkelijke bijzinnen en cleft sentences.

SPECIALTY COURSES
BUSINESS ENGLISH
(available from A2 to C1)
For people who want to focus on English used at work, especially speaking skills used in meetings with colleagues and clients.
Speaking and listening skills focus on language used at work, especially in meetings with colleagues and clients, but also speaking on the phone or giving presentations. For example, speaking topics include networking, running a project update meeting, explaining features and benefits, presenting visual information, negotiating with colleagues, and making plans.
Vocabulary covers workplace topics such as managing projects, outsourcing, communications technology, cultural differences, logistics and supply chains, and innovation.
These more specialised courses are for individuals (one-on-one) or private groups of 2-10 people. Due to reduced demand, these are 'bring-your-own-group' courses (thus they are not available to join as an individual).
These courses can be personalised according to your specific learning goals, are available at different lengths, and can also be delivered on location at your home, school, or office.
For a 26-hour course, prices start from €1600/€2000 (online/in-person) for one-on-one lessons and €2400 total for groups.

For B1- or B2-level learners preparing to take the TOEFL exam.

ACADEMIC WRITING

For those wishing to focus only on academic writing skills.
Writing skills are the only focus of this course - the goal is to produce academic writing that is clear, well-structured, precise, critical, and persuasive.
Topics include paragraph structure and essay structure; introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions; linking ideas with cohesive devices; summarising and paraphrasing sources; giving argument with supporting evidence; using an appropriately formal register; and more.

Matt Rooks
Director / English Teacher
In addition to teaching many of the English courses himself, Matt organises and supervises all of the education at Arnhem English School. Matt is a native speaker who grew up in the small village of Saranac Lake, New York, in the northeastern United States. He's been teaching English since 2009, about seventeen years. Before moving to The Netherlands in 2016, Matt taught English to adults in Turkey, Bahrain, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Besides English he speaks B2 (Upper-Intermediate) Dutch, A2 (Elementary) French, and A2 (Elementary) Turkish.

Esther Ticheler
English and Dutch (NT2) Teacher
Esther teaches English and also the occasional private Dutch (NT2) group course. She grew up bilingual in Enschede, The Netherlands. Esther has been teaching English since 2012, about fourteen years. Before she moved back to The Netherlands with Matt in 2016, Esther taught English to adults in Turkey, Bahrain, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Esther speaks both English and Dutch with native fluency.
Kelley teaches English and exam preparation courses. A native speaker from Vinalhaven, Maine, in the northeastern United States, Kelley met Matt and Esther back in 2011 when they worked together at the same language school in Istanbul. He's taught English since 2010, about sixteen years, in Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom. In addition to English Kelley also speaks A2 (Elementary) Turkish.
Pawel Kolodziejczyk
Marketing
Pawel handles the marketing, advertising, and web design for Arnhem English School. Originally from Kraków, Poland, Pawel moved to Istanbul's Kadıköy neighbourhood twenty years ago and never looked back. There he taught English at universities for many years before switching careers in 2016 to become the Marketing guru and Sales wizard that he is today. Besides native Polish Pawel speaks English at the C2 (native) level, Turkish at the B2 (Upper-Intermediate) level, and A2 (Elementary) French.
